‘Why Women Kill’ explores the 3 Dark Tales of Infidelity

Dark, humorous, and extremely engaging

To me – this is what CBS’s new show stands for. Created by Mac Cherry, Why Women Kill is a thought-provoking and engaging series that telecasts on CBS All Access. The first season of the series premiered on August 15, 2021 and shortly concluded after a run of 10 episodes. The good news is that its second series is already announced by the network (which would probably have different storylines). Let’s get to know about the scoops of Why Women Kill and what we know about the series so far!

Why Women Kill

What is the Show All About?

Why Women Kill explores three interesting storylines – all based in different periods (the 60s, 80s, and the present). Though, all these stories are connected through a common theme – a cheating spouse. It explores the lives of 3 couples who have lived in the same Pasadena mansion in California over different decades. The infidelity in the marriage triggers a chain of events that leads to a death. What follows is a gripping and emotional story in each decade with its unique charm.

Beth Ann and Rob: Stuck in the 60s

The first story is set in 1963 when Rob and Bet move to a Pasadena house after the demise of their daughter. Gradually, Beth discovers that Rob is having an affair with a waitress (April). Beth confronts April and gets to know about the truth by keeping her identity a secret. Beth tries to make the marriage work but it backfires and upsets Rob instead. This is followed by a series of events that puts their relationship to a test.

After going through a lot of emotional trauma, Beth gets to know about the truth behind her daughter’s death and how Rob had multiple affairs in the past. She plots revenge against Rob by igniting a fight, which finally led to his murder.

Simone and Karl: The Dance of the 80s

This unique story is based in 1984 when Simone discovered that her husband (Karl) is homosexual. After Karl’s fake suicide attempt, Simone was left heartbroken and starts an affair with Tommy. This led to a series of events as Simone comes to peace about her feelings for Tommy.

Gradually, the couple tries to get a divorce and in the process, the news of Karl’s sexuality and Simone’s affair spreads out. Simone tries to invest in her relationship with Tommy and works on travel plans while being friends with Karl. Though, it comes to a standstill when Simone discovers that Karl has AIDS. This led to a lot of drama with characters changing their priorities (including a murder attempt).

Taylor and Eli: Being in a Complicated Marriage in 2021

The last story is set in the present and is focused on a couple (Taylor and Eli) who has an open marriage. It starts when Taylor invites Jade to live with them and gradually both Taylor and Eli fall for her. The couple discovers that Jade had an abusive ex-boyfriend (Duke) and tries to help her come out of the failed relationship.

Eventually, as Eli and Jade fall for each other, this makes Taylor upset and being left out. As Eli struggles with drug abuse, Taylor walks out of the relationship while Jade stayed. Eventually, Taylor and Eli got to know about Jade’s true identity (Irene) who was accused of killing multiple people in the past. When Jade comes to know that Duke was responsible for blowing her cover, she reaches out to him (after a car crash) and stabs him to death.

Why Women Kill

How Does it End?

*Spoiler Alert*

As you can see, all three stories are focused on different themes. The first story fast forwards to ten years with April becoming a singer and Beth taking care of her baby. Simone eventually takes care of Karl, who decides to end his life. This changes Simone, who gets involves in AIDS research while Tommy becomes a painter.

Though, I found the ending of the third story the most exciting. When Jade comes after Taylor and Eli, it leads to a fight with Taylor killing Jade while protecting Eli. They finally sell the mansion and move away to focus on their relationship.

While the first story throws light on domestic abuse, the second story is focused on how lies can affect a relationship. The story of Taylor and Eli has portrayed drug abuse and its effects in one’s life in a mature way. In the end, Why Women Kill leaves us with three thought-provoking stories and relationships through different layers.

Why Women Kill

What would have happened if Beth/Simone/Taylor Spied on Their Husbands?

One of the reasons Why Women Kill is so popular is the way each story has been portrayed in a dark and humorous tone. Each of the storyline gives us a lesson in relationships and how we should all be more invested in our spouse’s life. The show, Why Women Kill, leaves us with a question – what would have happened if the wives were more involved, or possibly, spied on their husbands.

Beth would have known long back when Rob started cheating on her. Simone would have known about her husband’s homosexuality right from the start. She would have known about his truth when there were dating and might not have married him. Similarly, Taylor would have known about Eli’s drug abuse and his struggles. Their lives could have been drastically different and there might not have been so many murders as well.
